Bangladesh captain Najmul Shanto apologised to the fans after a disastrous performance in the Super Eights of the ongoing T20 World Cup. They have won three out of four matches in the group stage and were expected to put on a better performance in the next round, but the Bangla Tigers struggled hard and lost all three matches, that is against Australia, India and Afghanistan respectively.

Even after losing the first two matches of the Super Eights, Bangladesh had an opportunity to qualify for the semi-finals but they failed to capitalize. Shanto & Co restricted Afghanistan to 115 runs and had they chased it down in 12 overs, Bangladesh would have qualified for the semis. However, they couldn’t and Afghanistan eventually went on to the match by eight runs to progress to the next round.

After the game, the Bangladeshi skipper noted that the batting unit disappointed in the tournament, and he asked for forgiveness. He added that the team management would analyse the performance of the players and hoped that they produce better in the future.

“About our entire run in the World Cup, I would say that as a team, we have disappointed our fans. We have let down the people who always follow our matches. So, on behalf of my team, I apologise. As a batting group, we weren't able to deliver. We feel sorry for that. In future, we will try to come out of it,” Shanto said after the match against Afghanistan.

“The bowlers did really well. Coming into a tournament like this, Rishad bowled well in every match. There are quite a few positives. But in batting, we have disappointed our fans. We have hurt the people of the country,” he added.

The cricketer also mentioned that the players put in a lot of effort, and they gave their 100%, but the result didn’t go in their favour. He acknowledged the issues and once again apologised to the fans on behalf of the team.

“Still, I want to say that there was no shortage of efforts. All of us gave our hundred percent. Everyone did their work with honesty. But at the end of the day, we couldn't deliver. That's why, I want to say sorry on behalf of the team,” Shanto said.
