The ongoing third Ashes Test at Headingley witnessed a dramatic third day despite rain eating up the major chunk of play on the moving day. The start of the third day was delayed due to persistent rain, with the umpires forced into taking an early Lunch. The second session also suffered a similar fate as the pelting rain led to glum faces in the crowd.
Just when it looked like the day was going to be completely washed out by rain, the post-tea session saw players from both sides make their way into the middle. While it was a long wait for the hosts, their bowlers couldn't have asked for better conditions. An extra bit of zip and overcast conditions provided extra potency to the pacers and Chris Woakes made the most of it.
The seam-bowling all-rounder removed a well-set Mitchell Marsh to land a killer below, before getting rid of wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey in a similar fashion. Mark Wood and Stuart Broad made quick work of the tail, and the Australian lead only attained a bit of respect after Travis Head's late assault.
Weather forecast at Headingley, Leeds for third Ashes Test on Day 4
Although the day permitted just a little over two hours of play on the day, England are in pole position to claw their way back into the series with a win in Leeds. However, the weather forecast for the upcoming two days isn't great and Ben Stokes' men will hope to get things done on the fourth day itself.
While clear skies are expected to be prevalent in the morning hours, the forecast isn't great for the afternoon. There is a 79% chance of precipitation in the afternoon, according to Weather.com. Meanwhile, BCC Weather predicts light showers throughout the afternoon.
The showers in the afternoon mean that there might be a nagging delay in play, with players engaged in a game of cat and mouse. However, if the clouds stay away in the morning session, given England's relentless approach with the bat, the home side might be in a position to deliver a result as early as the second session.
