The much-awaited third Test of the Ashes 2023 got underway on Thursday, July 06 at Headingley, Leeds. England skipper won the toss and elected to bowl first on a track which had a tinge of green on top to aid seamers. The crowd at the stadium was in for another spectacular show as Stuart Broad and David Warner once again had a face-off in the first over of the game.
The Australian opener started the battle in emphatic style as he played an ‘on drive’ which beat the fielder at mid-on and raced away for a four to get his team off the mark. However, the joy was short-lived as Warner edged the fifth ball of the over straight to Zak Crawley at second slip and got dismissed by Broad for the 16th time in Test cricket.

The English seamer had his number in the first Test as well where he made Warner chop one back onto his stumps in the first innings. Earlier, during the 2019 Ashes as well Broad had the wood on Warner as he dismissed him on seven occasions out of ten innings. As a result, the Southpaw could only manage to score 95 runs in ten innings at an average of 9.5.
The Australian opener now ranks on the fourth spot in the list of most dismissals against a particular bowler in Tests. Warner joins England great Graham Gooch on the fourth spot, who was also dismissed 16 times by legendary West Indies seamer Malcolm Marshall in his Test career.
Former England batter Michael Atherton appears on the top and third position (twice) in the list being dismissed 19 times by Glenn McGrath and 17 times each by Sir Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh.
Australia get a hostile reception by Headingley crowd
While making their way out in the middle the Australian team were greeted with boos by the crowd in the aftermath of the controversial ‘Jonny Bairstow’ dismissal in the second Test. Commenting on the reception by the crowd, Australian skipper Pat Cummins said at the toss: “Would not expect anything less coming here.”
