Ashes 2023: Usman Khawaja's error in judgement hands Josh Tongue his first Ashes wicket
Josh Tongue picked up his first Ashes wicket when he dismissed Usman Khawaja for 17 at the stroke of Lunch.
For the ongoing second Test at Lord's, England have opted to go in with four seamers in their playing XI with Joe Root being the only one to roll his arm over for some spin-bowling. After the two-wicket loss in the first Test at Edgbaston, England made a solitary change to their playing XI, replacing Moeen Ali with Josh Tongue.
The right-arm pacer made his debut for England in the one-off Test against Ireland, earlier this month. He had a promising start to his career, picking up a five-for in the second innings. Ben Stokes stated that the experienced Mark Wood wasn't 100% fit to play the Lord's Test and that is why Tongue got the nod.
Australia got off to a solid start after Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to field first. David Warner and Usman Khawaja posted a 73-run stand for the first wicket after being dropped once each.
Tongue came on to bowl in the 18th over, and Warner cut loose immediately. The southpaw hit a couple of boundaries in the youngster's first over to put him under pressure. In his next over, Tongue switched to round the wicket and bowled a probing over.
He looked better as he kept bowling, and the nerves also settled down. Eventually, in the 24th over, the seamer was rewarded as he cleaned up the in-form Usman Khawaja with a beautiful delivery that came darting in.
The left-hander, who scored a century in the first innings and a fifty in the second innings at Edgbaston, shouldered arms to the delivery as the ball hit the top of the off stump, giving the bowler his first Ashes wicket. Khawaja scored 17 off 70 before being dismissed.
Players took Lunch at the fall of the wicket. Australia finished at the score of 73/1 in 23.1 overs at Lunch on Day 1.
David Warner departs for 66
As the play resumed after Lunch, Tongue picked up his second wicket with another beautiful inswinger as he dismissed David Warner for a stroke-filled 66 off 88 balls in the 30th over. Australia are at 99/2 at the end of 30 overs at the moment and in need of a good partnership.
