India and Sri Lanka are locking horns in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 on Sunday, September 17 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bat first to put runs on the board in the big final. However, the decision backfired as Indian seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj were all over the Sri Lankan batting with the new ball. The duo brought the defending champions down to their knees as they restricted them to 12/5 in 5.1 overs.

Bumrah began the proceedings in the first over itself as he got Kusal Perera (0 off 2) to edge one to the wicketkeeper KL Rahul. At the other end, Mohammed Siraj came on to bowl his second over and accounted for opener Pathum Nissanka as he played one straight to Ravindra Jadeja at point.

The right-arm seamer further dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama for a two-ball duck by trapping him in front of the stumps. Sri Lanka’s last game hero Charith Asalanka also fell prey to the Indian seamer on the very first ball as he hit one straight to Ishan Kishan.

The 29-year-old didn’t stop there and sent Dhananjaya de Silva on his way back to the pavilion making him edge one straight to Rahul. The dramatic over finally came to an end as Siraj picked four wickets giving away as many runs in the over. The Hyderabad-born cricketer dismissed Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka in his third over to pick up his first five-wicket haul of his ODI career.

Siraj equals Chaminda Vaas, Ali Khan's record

Siraj only took 16 balls to complete his five-wicket haul and became the joint fastest bowler to achieve the feat along with legendary Sri Lankan seamer Chaminda Vaas and USA pacer Ali Khan. Vaas achieved the feat against Bangladesh during the 2003 ODI World Cup where he picked up a hat trick. Khan, on the other hand, achieved the feat against Jersey. Meanwhile, Siraj further claimed his sixth scalp in his sixth over destroying stumps of the in-form Kusal Mendis.
