Australia went 2-1 up in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 after beating India in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) by a huge margin of 184 runs. This comprehensive win was driven by superb bowling ploys, and some poor batting displays by the visiting team, especially by senior members Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma.
The Aussies' win at the MCG has ruined India’s chances of winning another Test Series down under and has also made their chances of reaching the WTC Finals tougher.
There was little to show from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy, however, Rohit and Virat failing to lead the path for the Indian side with the bat has been a major area of concern throughout the series. While Kohli did score a century in the Perth Test, which Rohit missed, the skipper returned to play the rest of the series, but contributed as good as nothing with the bat.
The 37-year-old has managed a meagre 31 runs in the series so far, averaging an abysmal 6.20. This performance has put the Indian captain in the list of an unwanted record. The skipper now has the lowest average for a visiting captain in Australia, previously held by West Indies' Courtney Walsh, who scored at 7.75 during their tour of 1996-97.

Rohit’s poor 2024 run
There is no doubt that Rohit has been one of the best batters in the modern era, but looking at his performances in red-ball cricket, he has not lived up to the standards he has set for himself. In the last 15 innings, he has scored only 164 runs at an average of 10.93.
Speaking of his overall performance in Tests in the calendar year, the Nagpur-born has managed to amass 619 runs at 24.76. This is also the personal lowest average for Rohit in a single calendar year, which previously came during the 2015 season, where the batter averaged 25.07 across seven matches that year.
