Team India started the tour down under on a successful by decimating Australia by a whopping 295 runs in the first Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25). Fascinating enough, the oz media had dubbed the young Yashasvi Jaiswal as the “new king” of Indian cricket even before he landed in Perth with the team.

Just like a suspense thriller book, initially, things did not seem to go Jaiswal’s way as he was cheaply dismissed by Mitchell Starc through the gully region in the first innings of his international career in the Kangaroo land. However, he made quick amends and whacked a daddy hundred (161 runs) in the second innings at the Optus Stadium, to announce his arrival in a grand manner. The next game of the BGT 2024-25 Test series will be a pink-ball Test and will be played in Adelaide, starting on December 6.

Hence, all the fans are hoping to see Jaiswal standing tall to the challenges of the pink ball and delivering the goods for Team India. Not just that, a special record is awaiting the 22-year-old if achieved sooner, will get him enlisted into the elite of legendary Indian batters. Notably, Jaiswal is the second-most leading run-getter in the current calendar year after England stalwart, Joe Root. Notably, Root has scored 1,361 runs so far in 2024. While Jaiswal has amassed 1,280 runs this year. Hence, he is well on the way to possibly becoming the Indian batter with the most runs scored in a calendar year in the Test format.

Currently, the former India legend, Sachin Tendulkar, holds the record for scoring the most runs for India in a calendar year. Tendulkar had accumulated 1,562 runs from 14 Test appearances in the year 2010. The next best belongs to the former explosive opener, Virender Sehwag, who piled up 1,462 and 1,422 runs in years 2008 and 2010, respectively. The list also includes the likes of legendary Sunil Gavaskar, GR Viswanath, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli to name a few.

Given that the BGT 20240-25 is a five-Test series, even if Jaiswal fails to conquer the demons of the pink ball, the youngster will still have three more Tests to surpass the above-mentioned legends in a short period. Earlier, when England toured India, the Mumbai-based southpaw was in red-hot form as he smashed over 700 runs with two notable double centuries to his name. But in the last Test series against New Zealand at home, he failed to make a mark.

But with plenty of opportunities available during the Australia tour, Yashasvi Jaiswal is just 283 runs away from surpassing Sachin Tendulkar to claim the throne. Meanwhile, the record for scoring the most runs in a calendar year in Tests belongs to the former Pakistan batter, Mohammad Yousuf, who accumulated 1,788 runs in just 11 Tests in the year 2006.

Meanwhile, speaking of the upcoming second Test, Team India are facing a bit of a batting order conundrum as the regular Captain Rohit Sharma returns to the team after missing the first Test due to the birth of his second child. However, with the kind of batting brilliance showed by the KL Rahul-Yashasvi Jaiswal duo, it is unlikely that the skipper will look to tinker with the opening pair despite him being a premier opener for India for a few years now. Both the duo had put up a magnanimous partnership of 201 runs in Perth which led to a historic victory against Australia.
