AUS vs SA: COVID-19 positive Matt Renshaw loses umbrella; triggers laugh riot
Matt Renshaw remained unbeaten on 5 at the end of Day 2.
Even after testing positive for COVID-19, Australia batter, Matt Renshaw was drafted into the playing XI for the SCG Test against South Africa and eventually made his return to the Test team after four long years. Now, since he’s affected by the virus, the cricketer had to be isolated from the rest of his teammates and was seen waiting to bat on Day 2 near the boundary rope.
While waiting for his turn, a humorous incident involving him and his umbrella that he was using for shade unfolded and left the spectators in splits. Sitting in the commentary box of Fox Sports, Mark Howard was quick to narrate the incident on air and told the viewers what exactly happened down near the boundary rope.
“Matthew Renshaw is back into the side after a long time away from Test cricket and he found out the morning of, that he was COVID positive. He was playing cards on his own. He was down here under the umbrella, isolating and even that went wrong for him when it blew in the opposite direction,” Howard said.
Meanwhile, fellow commentator Kerry O’Keeffe mentioned that the 26-year-old deserves a standing ovation if he manages to cross the double-figure mark in the third Test against South Africa.
“If he gets double figures the crowd should give him a standing ovation. This has been a journey over the last two days for Matt Renshaw. Nothing is going right. He is Covid positive two days in a row. He plays solitaire by himself in a room. He wears a mask everywhere and his umbrella betrays him,” the 73-year-old said.
That would be the final straw: Howard’s candid take on Renshaw’s umbrella incident
While talking about the same, Howard while being sarcastic also seemed a bit concerned for Renshaw and hoped for the well being of the southpaw.
“Surely he didn’t hurt himself with his umbrella? That would be the final straw. He comes into a Test match and gets his opportunity and gets COVID shortly after the team naming as such, so he can play,” the commentator added.
