The Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 clash between Mumbai and Nagaland on Tuesday, December 31, saw some excellent performances put together. From Shardul Thakur’s all-round brilliance to Mumbai clinching a comfortable win, there were several moments from the game that went viral.
One of the most notable performances in the game was given by youngster Ayush Mhatre. The 17-year-old batter etched his name in the history books with a stellar knock against Nagaland. Opening the innings for Mumbai, Mhatre scored 181 runs in a mere 117 deliveries and helped his side post a mammoth total of 403/7 in the first innings.
At just 17 years and 168 days old, Mhatre became the youngest ever batter in the history of List A cricket to score 150+ runs in a match, thus surpassing fellow Mumbai mate and India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. It is worth noting that Jaiswal achieved the feat at the age of 17 years and 291 days old.
As for the game, as Nagaland aimed to chase down a target of 404 runs in the second innings, the side could not go all the way and fell significantly short. Nagaland was limited to a score of 214 runs as Mumbai won the game by 189 runs.

Mhatre was on CSK’s radar ahead of IPL 2025
It is interesting to note that Ayush Mhatre went unsold in the recently concluded IPL 2025 mega auction. According to reports, the youngster was on Chennai Super Kings’ radar ahead of the auction. Former skipper MS Dhoni and the CSK talent scouts were quite impressed with Mhatre’s talent and had desired to recruit the Mumbai batter in their squad.
However, the youngster went unsold despite reportedly giving trials. Although, he seems to have picked up his stride and looks to be in brilliant form now. The youngsters will hope that he can continue the run of form and continue to perform, and make a solid case in the future editions of the IPL.
