‘Babar needs to be replaced as captain’ - Najam Sethi reveals Shahid Afridi wanted to strip Babar Azam as Pakistan skipper

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi recently came forward to talk about the recently formed interim selection committee’s plans to replace star batter Babar Azam as the skipper of the national team. The interim selection committee was led by former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi.

The committee was made before Pakistan’s home series against New Zealand, and Sethi reflected on the fact that before it was appointed, there were rumours of them wanting to replace Babar as skipper.

"We made an interim selection committee when we took charge. Before the selectors came on board, they told us that there will need to be some changes and Babar needs to be replaced as captain as well," Sethi said in a video on Waheed Khan’s YouTube channel.

"However, as soon as they were appointed, they said there is no need to replace Babar. I told them you are entitled to change your mind," he added.

As long as Babar is a successful batsman and a successful captain, he will remain captain: Sethi

In the video, Sethi continued upon the same. He opined that as long as Babar is successful and keeps winning matches for Pakistan, the 28-year-old will continue to captain the national side. There is no doubt that Babar is one of the best batters in world cricket currently, and under his captaincy, Pakistan have flourished.

"As long as Babar is a successful batsman and a successful captain, he will remain captain. If you continue to lose series, people will start questioning your captaincy and other qualities," Sethi said.

Apart from that, the PCB chief also took to Twitter to quash the rumours surrounding Babar’s captaincy. He Tweeted, "Babar Azam came to see me today. I told him he will lead the ODI and T20I national teams against New Zealand. And then @TheRealPCB announced the squads. So all those who were spreading fake fears are out of jobs today."
