Bangladesh received a major boost as star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is set to make his return for the forthcoming second Test against Sri Lanka as the board announced the squad on Tuesday, March 26. The match is scheduled to be held at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, starting on March 30. Notably, the two-match Test series is a part of the 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship cycle.

The 37-year-old makes his comeback to international cricket for the first time since his last appearance in the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup held in India in October-November. His participation in the ICC global event was curtailed before his side's final match against eventual champions Australia due to a left index finger injury. Earlier in January, he was diagnosed with a retinal condition, but the Bangladesh medical team were “optimistic about managing the condition effectively with a conservative approach.”

With Shakib's inclusion in the squad, star batter Towhid Hridoy, who was initially included in the 15-member squad for the opening Test, has been left out for the second game. In addition, the left-handed batter last participated in a Test match in April 2023 when Bangladesh locked horns with Ireland in Mirpur.

Moreover, pacer Mushfik Hasan, who did not play the first Test, has sustained an injury on his left ankle. He has been replaced by fellow right-arm pacer Hasan Mahmud, who is vying to make his debut in the longest format of the game. Mahmud will bring the experience of playing 39 games in ODIs and T20Is for Bangladesh. For the unversed, Sri Lanka holds a 1-0 lead after winning the first Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium by 328 runs.
