Australia batter and Melbourne Renegades skipper Nic Maddinson will remain on the sidelines for the rest of the ongoing Big Bash League season after scans confirmed a ruptured ACL on Monday, January 2. In the match against defending champions Perth Scorchers, Maddinson went down clutching his left knee in an attempt to field the ball.

Graham Manou, Cricket Victoria's General Manager of Cricket mentioned that they will support Maddinson during this tough phase of his career.

“Our thoughts are with Nic and we will continue to support him as he works through his recovery. Nic has also been an outstanding leader within our young squad and I have no doubt he will continue to play that role through his rehabilitation process. We're right behind Nic, we'll provide our full support in any way we can,” told Manou.

Melbourne Renegades to look for replacement

The skipper’s injury leaves the franchise without an opener to partner Kiwi batter, Martin Guptill for the rest of the season. Stand-in skipper for the Renegades Aaron Finch can be one of the contenders to fill the void at the top of the order. He is fairly experienced and looks the ideal candidate for the slot and the team will look to feed off his energy.

Moreover, veteran batter Shaun Marsh, who was rested after the loss to Perth Scorchers, too is in contention to take up the spot. Mackenzie Harvey and Sam Harper, who opened in the Renegades' first four games of the ongoing season are also options that the side could explore. Harvey could be a like to like replacement since he is a southpaw himself.

It remains to be seen who the franchise looks up to for the opening pair ahead of their next fixture in the league. Renegades will next lock horns with their cross-town rivals Melbourne Stars in the Melbourne Derby at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on January 3.. The Adam Zampa-led Stars are currently occupying the seventh position.
