BBL 2022-23: Why Adam Zampa's botched run-out attempt at non-striker's end was deemed unsuccessful
Melbourne Stars captain's arm went past vertical while attempting run-out.
Melbourne Stars captain Adam Zampa attempted a failed run-out at non-striker's end as Tom Rogers survived in the ongoing Big Bash League 2022-23 derby clash against the Renegades on Tuesday (January 4). While bowling the final over, the star Australian spinner spotted Rogers crossing the crease too early and took the bails off, after almost completing his action.
Rogers was upset but started walking towards the pavilion as the crowd at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) started booing Zampa for his poor sportsmanship. At the striker's end, Mackenzie Harvey was shaking his head in disbelief, with Zampa carrying a smile on his face. Officials checked the response and ruled out the wicket as Zampa's bowling arm was past vertical.
As per laws, if the non-striker is out of his ground at any time from the moment the ball comes into play until the instant when the bowler is expected to release the ball, then the non-striker is liable to run out. However, if the ball is not delivered then it's the umpire's decision on a run-out.
Fans continued to boo the Australian ace apinner when he walked off towards the pavilion at the innings break.
Tom Rogers returns with five-wicket spell
Zampa bowled an impressive spell with a wicket of Akeal Hosein while conceding just 19 runs. Trent Boult and Luke Wood took two wickets each to restrict the Renegades to just 141/7 while bowling first. For the Renegades Shaun Marsh, Martin Guptill, and Mackenzie Harvey scored 32 runs each but the Stars' bowlers put in impressive overall performance.
However, after surviving a run-out from Zampa, Tom Rogers gave the Renegades a sensational start. He bowled out Joe Clarke on the innings' second delivery and then took two more wickets in the third over to stumble the Stars' top-order. He went on to grab two more wickets during his second spell to complete five wickets while conceding just 16 runs from his four-over spell.
