BBL 2023-24: David Payne replaces injured Rashid Khan in Adelaide Strikers
Payne picked up ten wickets in six matches for Perth Scorchers in the last season.
England pacer David Payne has been named as Rashid Khan’s replacement in the Adelaide Strikers’ squad for Big Bash League 2023-24. Notably, the star spinner had to opt out following a minor back injury and will be missing the upcoming season undergoing surgery. Rashid’s late withdrawal opened up the door for Payne, who played a crucial role in helping Perth Scorchers win the title in the last edition.
Meanwhile, in Rashid’s absence, the Strikers have been left with Cameron Boyce as their number-one spin option. All-rounder such as Matt Short and D’Arcy Short are likely to chip in from time to time but their spin department looks a bit pale. However, they have a very strong pace bowling unit, which will have to take a lot of responsibilities in BBL 2023-24.
Head coach Jason Gillespie, on the other hand, has expressed his delight after getting Payne on board. Calling him a ‘proven performer', Gillespie believes that his experience and wicket-taking ability will be key for the team in the upcoming season.
“We are thrilled to have David join our squad for the upcoming BBL season. He is a proven performer at the highest level and will bring a wealth of experience to our team. His wicket-taking ability, skills in the field and positivity around the group will all be invaluable to our outfit,” Gillespie was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au
Excited to get amongst the group: Payne
After signing for the Strikers, Payne stated that he is excited to join the franchise and meet all his teammates. The pacer added that he can’t wait to play in front of the home crowd, and especially on New Year’s Eve, which holds a lot of reputation.
“New Year's Eve in particular is a game with an awesome reputation and I know that is going to be a really special night to be a part of. I have heard nothing but great things about the Strikers and am excited to get amongst the group and hopefully building a successful season as a team,” Payne said.
