Rohit Sharma's form, especially in the Test arena, has been a major talking point in the cricket fraternity in recent months. The legendary batter has been a pale shadow of his former self with the bat and the Indian team has also suffered defeats in consecutive Test series against New Zealand and Australia. Quite a few experts opined that it is time for the Mumbai batter to step away. However, Rohit has maintained that he has more to offer to the national team.
As per reports, time seems to be running out for the veteran as the selectors have reportedly asked him to communicate his future plans after the Champions Trophy 2025, where he will lead the Indian team. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is looking to go on a transition phase with important events like the World Test Champions 2025-2027 cycle and the ODI World Cup 2027 coming up.
"The selectors and people in the board had this discussion with Rohit around the time of the last selection meeting. He has been told that he needs to decide how he wants to plan his future after the Champions Trophy. The team management has certain plans going into the next World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and the ODI World Cup. They want to ensure everyone is on the same page for a smoother transition," a BCCI source said as per Times of India (TOI).
India are set to play a five-Test series in England after the Indian Premier League (IPL). The selectors might want to invest in the youth with an eye on the future. Notably, Rohit Sharma will turn 38 in April and 40 by the time the next WTC final is going to be played in 2027.
Bumrah’s chances of completing a full season will always be in doubt: BCCI Source
Meanwhile, the selectors are also looking at captaincy options in the red-ball team. Bumrah has served as the vice-captain in Tests but there are concerns over his fitness and availability. There is a possibility that youngsters like Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant could be given the prestigious role.

"Bumrah’s chances of a long Test series or completing a full season will always be in doubt. The selectors may want a more stable option. Gill has been seen as a captaincy prospect but his returns in Test cricket have been average. Rishabh Pant could also be a strong candidate and maybe someone like Yashashvi Jaiswal can be groomed for the role," the source concluded.
