The IPL (Indian Premier League) franchises have asked for an increase in the number of players to be retained for the next three seasons of the IPL. The opinions of all 10 franchises were taken on the matter, but it has been observed that the majority are in favour of adding more retentions.

In 2021, the BCCI allowed for four retentions to be made with the condition that no more than three could be Indians and no more than two could be overseas players. The potential change could happen amid the BCCI’s process of finalising the retention policy.

Furthermore, a final decision on the matter is anticipated at a meeting of the franchise owners in the latter stages of this month. The acting CEO of the BCCI and IPL in-charge, Hemang Amin, recently consulted the CEOs of the various sides seeking their views on it and the salary caps for the next three years.

A mega auction is scheduled to take place in the latter stages of 2024, and opinions on the inclusion of Right to Match (RTM) cards were also demanded, a feature that was not used in 2021.

According to Cricbuzz, most franchises have requested between five and seven retentions, with one side even suggesting eight. Furthermore, some teams have also opined that there should be no retentions at all. Furthermore, the CEOs were also consulted on the player purse, and the opinions have varied.

The view has been that the salary cap could range between Rs 110 and 120 crore, and an increase of INR 20 crore was not ruled out as well. Currently, the cap stands at INR 100 crore. There were also discussions on the Impact Player rule. According to reports, the media holders are satisfied with the rule, but the feedback coming from the coaches and the players is not in favour of it.
