International cricket boards' fondness with the Kolkata Knight Riders coaches and mentors remains a curious case. Trevor Bayliss, Matthew Mott, and Brendon McCullum are notable figures who were formerly associated with KKR before being employed in high-profile coaching role with the England & Wales Cricket Board. Each of the three eventually took the mantle of a head coach too. Presently, Mott and McCullum helm England's white-ball and red-ball sides, respectively.
A similar narrative seems set to unfold with Gautam Gambhir, KKR's IPL 2024 mentor, firmly in contention to take India's head coaching job following a thrilling IPL season, which KKR clinched to secure their third title.
Meanwhile, in India's coach selection sphere, the dominant mantra doing the rounds is 'desh ke liye karna hai (we must do it for the country)', as per a Cricbuzz report. It states that the dialogue between BCCI secreterary Jay Shah and Gambhir is revolving around this core principle. Known for his unwavering patriotism, Gambhir has openly expressed his longing to serve in the army following India's 2011 World Cup triumph while his public advocacy for national causes as a Member of Parliament underscore his deep-seated patriotism.

Yet, taking on the prestigious role of head coach for India wouldn't be as straightforward as transitioning from LSG mentorship to KKR in the IPL. Securing an Indian coaching contract will restrict him from engaging in roles such as television expert, commentator, coach, or mentor. Furthermore, the role with Team India demands nearly relentless travel, which poses as a substantial challenge for every individual.
Even after all this, Gambhir has confided in those close to him about contemplating the opportunity. Even Shah Rukh Khan, the co-owner of KKR is privy to this information, as per the report. Monday marked the deadline for submitting applications for the position, and it's probable that Gambhir has officially applied, although there has been no confirmation.

According to a report on Sunday, a prominent IPL franchise owner, with close ties to the top echelons of the BCCI, informed Cricbuzz that Gambhir's appointment is all but confirmed, with an official announcement imminent. Additionally, a renowned commentator in the know, mentioned that concerted efforts are underway to secure Gambhir's services.
