The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently confirmed the date for conducting a Special General Meeting (SGM) on January 12, 2025, at its Mumbai headquarters. The agenda for this meeting includes the election of the new secretary and treasurer, following the vacancies left by Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar. The BCCI’s constitution mandates filling any vacant posts within 45 days.
In the same regard, a notice was sent by the board to the cricket state associations on Saturday. As per the notice, the time mentioned for the meeting was 12 noon time with the above-mentioned date. Furthermore, it also specified the agenda of electing the two officials viz- Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Notably, the said notice was sent by the joint Secretary of the Indian board, Devjit Saikia. For the unversed, Saikia is also the acting interim BCCI Secretary.
"Notice is hereby given to all members to attend the meeting (SGM) on 12 January at noon for the induction of election of secretary and treasurer. You are requested to attend the meeting on time," read the notice sent by Saikia as per Cricbuzz.
Notably, he was recently appointed by the BCCI President, Roger Binny. Binny had exercised his special powers as per the constitution after the Secretary designation was laying vacant with probable candidates eventually taking charge elsewhere.
"The President shall, in the event of a vacancy, or indisposition of an office-bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer, delegate the functions to another Office-Bearer, until the vacancy is duly filled up, or the indisposition ceases." However, he has not made any such interim arrangement for the vacant treasurer's role," the Article 7.2 (d) of the BCCI constitution states.
Meanwhile, the need for electing the BCCI officials arose after the former Secretary, Jay Shah, left the post in a bid to take the role of the Chairman of the International Cricket Committee (ICC). On the other hand, the former board Treasurer, Ashish Shelar, resigned from the coveted post, after he became a part of the newly-elected state government of Maharashtra.

As far as the rules and regulations of the ICC, for assuming the topmost post of the global cricket body, the Chair should not be a part of any association of the member countries affiliated with the apex governing body. When it comes to the rules of the constitution laid by the BCCI, a person holding a ministerial position cannot become an office bearer for India's apex cricket governing body. As a result, the upcoming SGM will induct the new board officials for the vacant posts.
