On October 31, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises unveiled their retained players list. There was immense fervour after the retention lists were out as the star players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer were released and this raised many eyebrows.

Subsequently, the IPL 2025 mega auction will take place on November 24 and 25, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Amid this development catching pace, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has sent the Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchises the final date to submit their retention lists. The Indian board had earlier directed the teams to submit the list by October 15.

However, the date was extended to November 7, 2024. Following that, the board will then conduct a mini auction ahead for which the date remains undecided. It is worth noting that, a team can have 18 members with six overseas players in their squad. According to FemaleCricket, franchises Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Gujarat Giants will have to submit their retention lists by the last date given to them by the board.

BCCI has increased the purse amount for next WPL season

The auction purse for each team was 12 crore in the first season and 13.5 crore in WPL 2024. The upcoming season will see the increment in purse amount to 15 crore. Moreover, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has unveiled the Future Tour Program (FTP) to schedule women’s cricket across the globe.

One of the major aspects of the programme is also avoiding franchise leagues overlapping the international fixtures. With this coming into the picture, the lucrative Indian women’s cricket league will have a new window from 2026 onwards. The WPL will be conducted in February rather than January from 2026.
