BCCI to pay ICC’s tax for ODI World Cup 2023
The BCCI will pay the Indian Government a staggering INR 963 crore in taxes for the next Cricket World Cup 2023 on behalf of the ICC (International Cricket Council).
When three men's competitions—the 2016 T20 World Cup, the 2018 Champions Trophy (later renamed to the 2021 T20 World Cup, which was contested in 2022 in UAE and Oman due to the Covid-19 pandemic), and the 2023 ODI World Cup—were awarded to India in 2014, the BCCI and the ICC had already inked a host agreement that contained the tax exemption. According to the deal, the BCCI was "obligated" to assist the ICC in obtaining tax benefits.
According to ESPNCricinfo, the Indian tax authorities told the ICC in 2022 that a 20% tax order will be levied on the World Cup 2023 broadcast profits. The BCCI informed its members and state organisations in a memo that any taxes "incurred" by the ICC would be "adjusted" against the revenues received by the Indian board from the central revenue pool. Furthermore, the ICC is expected to collect USD 533.29 million from the showpiece event broadcasts.
