Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024: Cameron Green set to start as pure batter against India

Team Australia's key all rounder Cameron Green had suffered a back injury during the third game of the ODI series against England, back in September. However, as per the latest developments, it was revealed that Green may just be able to recover enough to start as a batter in the side and will not be bowling upfront in the upcoming Test series against India.

Notably, the much-awaited series is scheduled to commence on November 22. Interestingly, the first game will be played in the iconic venue of Perth. Initially, the all rounder was tipped to miss the whole of the India series, but is now due to start the series. However, he will only start bowling probably in the latter phase of the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

Currently, Cricket Australia are yet to make any formal announcement in this regard but if reports are to be believed, most likely by next, there will be some confirmation ahead. Three anonymous sources while spilling the beans regarding Cameron Green's bowling availability, also added that the cricket board has already started having backup plans well before the cricket summer starts. At this stage, Green has already been ruled out of the games, which are slated to be played in the domestic circuit aka the coveted Sheffield Shield, starting this week.

Batting and fielding don’t put a huge load on the body: Doctor Brukner

Even the chances are slim of the star all rounder to start getting back to action in the second round of the domestic tournament. But the 25-year-old may resume playing for Australia A side against India A, in a game slotted to be held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) next month.

While speaking in clinical terms, Cricket Australia's doctor Peter Brukner said that once the initial pain experienced by Green subsides, he should not have much problem in batting and taking part in the fielding drills. Albeit, he warned that bowling close to ten overs can lead to the resurfacing of Green's back injury.

“The load comes mainly from bowling—batting and fielding don’t put a huge load on that part of the body, so it’s feasible that once the pain settles down you can bat and field without too many problems and feel fine,” Brukner told The Age.

“It’s just that if you were to bowl 10 overs, you’d probably break down again. So it’s a case of slowly building up the load so the bone basically adjusts to the load and gets stronger. There’s a bit of an art to it,” the Australian doctor concluded.

Meanwhile, speaking of Cameron Green's cricketing journey, the all rounder was a vital cog of Australia's World Test Championship (WTC) team which lifted the mega title in 2023. So far, Green has featured in 28 Test matches for the baggy greens. During these games, he has accumulated 1,377 runs and has 35 victims to his name, when it comes to bowling services.
