India skipper Rohit Sharma and current India head coach Rahul Dravid have expressed their thoughts amid KL Rahul's batting slump and discussions on his potential replacement gaining momentum with every other failure.
KL Rahul has been recently on the receiving end of some massive criticism from fans and cricket experts alike, with former cricketer Venkatesh Prasad being the most vocal in expressing his displeasure on KL Rahul's outings for India on the micro-blogging site Twitter.
Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid ready to back KL Rahul
“Of late there has been lot of talk about his (KL Rahul) batting. For us as the management, we look at the potential of any individual, not just KL, and players with potential will get extended run," Rohit Sharma said while speaking to reporters in the post-match press conference after India’s six-wicket win over Australia, as quoted by NDTV Sports. The hosts have retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, by taking a 2-0 lead in the four-match series.
The 35-year-old stated that KL Rahul though might be struggling now, still has massive potential in him to bounce back whenever the team needed him. And most importantly, KL has delivered for the team in the most crunch situations and on the toughest of wickets.
“Batting at Lord’s on a damp wicket, it was one of the best hundreds I have seen, Centurion also, so he has potential and we are backing him," Rohit stated.
Rohit wasn't alone, even team India's head coach Rahul Dravid on an equal note stated that the management would by all means back KL Rahul for more opportunities so as to provide him the adequate space and time to bounce back and once again start delivering for India.
"KL Rahul has been one of our most successful overseas openers. He’s got hundred in South Africa, England and we’ll continue to back him. I believe he has the quality and class to come out of this phase," said the 50-year-old.
