Star Australia all-rounder Cameron Green stated that he did not feel fully in control of the situation on Day 1 of the first Test against New Zealand at Basin Reserve in Wellington. Green, batting in his new No. 4 spot, hit an unbeaten 103 by Stumps, and stated that he was relieved that he had survived the whole day.

The 24-year-old kept Australia's innings sailing with his second Test century in Wellington's bowler-friendly conditions. After the first day's play, the right-handed batter said that he found it difficult to find his rhythm and the track was difficult to bat on.

"I just tried to find something out there. I didn't really feel I had the ebb and flow ... it was quite tough when I went out there and even on a flat wicket I still take time to get in. It obviously feels really good. It's a pretty tough wicket out there. I felt like the boys played pretty well. It was just one of those days, someone needed to bat through, so I was glad it was me," Green was quoted as saying by Perth Now.

Australia reach 279 on Day 1

Australia made a promising start after being asked to bat first in the opening Test of the two-match series in New Zealand, which is their first Test in the country since 2016. The tourists endured a significant collapse, losing four wickets for just 89 runs, which included dismissals of key players like Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head, after a solid 61-run opening partnership between Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith.

Following the early setback, a crucial 67-run partnership between Cameron Green and Mitchell Marsh, with the latter contributing a brisk 40 off 39 balls, helped steady Australia's innings. By the close of play on Day 1, the Pat Cummins-led side had reached 279/9. Matt Henry stood out among the New Zealand bowlers, claiming a four-wicket haul, while Will O'Rourke and Scott Kuggeleijn chipped in with two scalps each.
