Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been announced as the deputy of Najmul Hossain Shanto for the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy by the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Thursday. The entire Bangladeshi unit on will depart for Dubai tonight to prepare for their tournament opener against last edition's runners-up, India.
Mehidy has played a total of 103 ODIs for Bangladesh. He recently led the side during their tour of the West Indies in the absence of the full-time skipper, who was out due to a groin strain. Litton Das was the skipper during the T20I series, while Mehidy shouldered the burden during the ODIs and Tests. Bangladesh went on to draw the Test series in addition to being clean-swept in the ODI series and coming back in emphatic style to win the T20Is by a 0-3 scoreline.
The pace-bowling unit will further be bolstered with the inclusion of Hasan Mahmud and Khaled Ahmed, who will accompany the side to Dubai for their game against India.
"Pacers, Hasan Mahmud and Khaled Ahmed will travel to Dubai on Saturday to train with the Bangladesh Champions Trophy squad. The bowlers will return home following Bangladesh's opening match of the tournament against India in Dubai on February 20," stated a statement released by the BCB on Thursday, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Out of the previous eight editions of the marquee ODI tournament, Bangladesh have featured in five seasons. Despite hosting the inaugural edition (then called Wills International Cup 1998), they were not part of the tournament. Their best finish was in the 2017 edition, where they reached the semi-finals of the competition. Bangladesh are placed in Group A alongside India, Pakistan, and New Zealand.

In the four ODIs Miraz has led Bangladesh up until now, the side has lost all of their matches. There will be a lot of expectations on Mehidy to rise to the occasion for Bangladesh to have any hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.
