The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has paid serious attention to a security breach that occurred during the recent ICC Champions Trophy match between New Zealand and Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Monday. The incident, which saw a spectator invade the field of play, has raised questions about security arrangements in the host nation for the ongoing tournament.
During the Group A match, a fan entered the field carrying a photo of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Hafiz Saad Rizvi and attempted to hug New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra. Security personnel quickly intervened, restricting the intruder before he could interact further with the player.
The individual, identified as a resident of Attock, was taken into custody inside the stadium before being moved to the New Town police station. Following the incident, the PCB has stressed ensuring the safety of players and officials.
"The PCB has taken serious note of the security breach that occurred yesterday when a spectator entered the field of play. Ensuring the safety of players and officials remains our top priority. The individual involved was arrested and presented before a court of law today. In addition, he has been permanently banned from entering all cricket venues in Pakistan. Special control room established to monitor movement
A case was registered against the intruder for obstructing a public servant in performing duties and criminal trespass. On Tuesday, he was presented before a court, which granted him bail upon submission of a surety bond worth PKR 50,000. The PCB further announced that the individual has been permanently banned from entering all cricket venues in Pakistan.
In response to the security failure, law enforcement agencies have decided to strengthen security measures for upcoming matches in the tournament. Over 5,000 police personnel, along with 350 traffic officers, have been deployed in and around the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium to prevent any further breaches.
A special control room has been established to monitor movement, while snipers have been stationed on rooftops to enhance surveillance. Additionally, elite forces, dolphin force squads, and patrolling units have been activated in the vicinity to maintain order.
