Despite facing elimination from the ongoing Asia Cup quite early, Bangladesh ended the tournament on a positive note. The side faced off against Rohit Sharma-led India in their final game of the competition and ran away with a thrilling six-run victory.
Coming in to bat first in the game, Bangladesh showed resilience and significant improvement, as the batters did a good job of posting a reasonable total on the scoreboard. Posting 265 runs on the board in the first innings, Bangladesh bundled India out for 259 runs in the second innings.
After the win, Bangladesh’s head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha, came forward to heap praise on his side and opine that it was one of the most pleasing wins for Bangladesh in recent times.
"That was one of the most pleasing wins for us lately. Most of the players contributed to this win, so that was pleasing to see. In this Asia Cup series, we had some individual performances, but we didn't have a collective effort. So, this game was a true collective effort, and that was very pleasing," Hathurusingha was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
This win against India is huge for us going into a tournament like the World Cup: Hathurusingha
Hathurusingha also stated that a win against India would do a world of good for Bangladesh with the ODI World Cup 2023 rapidly approaching. He opined that he was not making excuses for Bangladesh’s exit but talked of the ever-changing conditions between Pakistan and Sri Lanka and the fitness issues of several players.
"This win against India is huge for us going into a tournament like the World Cup. It gives us a lot of confidence, especially considering what happened in this tournament. We had a really good run up to the Asia Cup, but, to be honest, we struggled to put forth a collective effort. As I said before, I'm not making excuses, but we played in different conditions like Kandy and Lahore, then returned to play on this wicket," Hathurusingha said.
