Veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla is having a great season in IPL 2023 as he’s the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians with 17 wickets to his name. Chawla didn’t feature in IPL 2022 after failing to attract bidders in the auction. However, the 34-year-old was picked by MI for INR 50 lakh at the mini-auction held in December 2022.
Recently, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shared a hilarious story involving Chawla and his six-year-old son. Ashwin revealed that Chawla doesn’t allow his son to pick up the ball and hits him on his hand whenever he does so. He further stated that the wrist spinner has asked MI to keep aside INR 20 crore for his son whom he’s training every day.
"He said 'my son is also watching each and every game and torturing me like anything'. I asked him does he like cricket? He told me he loves the sport and gets everyone in the family to sit in front of the TV and watch matches Piyush told me that he has told his son to not even dream of becoming a bowler. His son is 7 years old and if he even touches the ball, he hits him in his hand. He forces the ball off his hand and gives the bat,” said Ashwin on his Youtube Channel.
"He said he has already told Mumbai Indians that a good batter is developing and keep aside Rs 20 crore.I asked him about training. He said 'I am bowling to him from the morning. If I bowl in the IPL, they are paying me only Rs 50 lakh. If he bats well, in 10 years' time, they will pay him Rs 20 crore," he added.
Chawla has 17 wickets in IPL 2023
Notably, Chawla has picked 17 wickets from 11 matches in the ongoing season so far at an average of 18.88 and an economy of 7.46. His best performance of the season so far came against Delhi Capitals when he picked 3/22 in his four-over spell in Delhi. The wrist spinner has emerged as the knight in shining armour for MI who’ve been struggling with the ball due to injuries to fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Jasprit Bumrah.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians are ranked eighth in the points table with five wins from ten games. They lost their previous fixture against Chennai Super Kings by six wickets and will hope for a strong show in their remaining four league games to qualify for the play-offs.
