County Championship: Chris Wright joins Sussex from Leicestershire on two-year contract

Veteran seamer Chris Wright will join Sussex on a two-year deal from the start of the 2024 season. The 37-year-old is currently playing for another county club, Leicestershire. In his first-class career that has spanned 20 seasons, Wright has claimed 567 wickets from 196 Test matches at an average of 32.30 and an economy rate of 3.43.

Meanwhile, in domestic white-ball cricket, he has picked up 174 wickets. Hence, Wright has a plethora of experience which allows him to play in all the formats for his new club. Notably, this season, he has also batted well, averaging 56.8 in 10 innings in the County Championship which included an unbeaten 66 and 40 in a remarkable victory over Yorkshire at Headingley. After signing the deal with Sussex, Wright expressed his excitement at joining the club for the 2024 season and beyond. The 37-year-old also said that he had long admired the club and is very excited to be a part of its future success.

"I am delighted to be joining Sussex for the 2024 season and beyond. I have long admired the club and am looking forward to contributing to its future success," Wright was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

He went on to say that he spoke with head coach Paul Farbrace and is pleased to be joining such a skilled and ambitious bunch. He added that he hopes to take many wickets and contribute significantly to the team.

"Speaking to Paul Farbrace and having played against the team a number of times, I am excited to be joining such a talented and ambitious group. Hopefully, I will take lots of wickets and provide some valuable experience to the team," Wright added.

Sussex head coach, Paul Farbrace, expressed his excitement at the addition of Chris Wright to the squad. The bowler was praised by the coach, who described him as a tremendously experienced cricketer who will offer technique, experience, and a strong passion for the game. He went on to say that Wright's ball skills will be wonderful for their young team and will help them win games.

"I'm delighted that Chris has committed the next two seasons to joining our project at Hove. He is a vastly experienced cricketer who will bring skill, experience, and a huge passion for the game. Chris is someone I have admired for a long time, and his quality with the ball will be fantastic for our developing team and will help us to win matches," the coach said.
