CPL 2024: Nicholas Pooran breaks Mohammad Rizwan's world record in T20s

The explosive batter Nicholas Pooran scripted history as he became the highest run-getter in a calendar year in T20 cricket, surpassing Mohammad Rizwan's 2021 record tally of 2,036 runs. The prolific wicketkeeper-batter from West Indies, achieved this feat during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2024) clash between Trinbago Knight Riders and Barbados Royals at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, on Saturday, September 28.
After Rovman Powell won the toss and opted to field first, Maheesh Theekshana and Jason Holder got the better of openers Jason Roy and Shaqkere Parris, respectively. However, Pooran, who came out to bat at No. 3, got off the mark with a boundary off the first ball he faced and went on to score a quickfire 27 off just 15 deliveries. The southpaw hit four fours and a solitary maximum during his brief but entertaining stay at the crease.
With his latest innings, the 28-year-old took his total to 2,059 runs for the year in the shortest format of the game. The Knight Riders went on to win the match by 30 runs after restricting Barbados Royals to 145/9 in the second innings.

Stellar performances of Nicholas Pooran in 2024
Pooran has been in excellent form in the T20 cricket this year. He has represented various teams, including Trinbago Knight Riders, Durban Super Giants, Lucknow Super Giants, MI's Emirates and New York teams, along with Northern Super Chargers, Rangpur Riders, and West Indies, respectively.
Pooran has scored his 2,059 runs in 2024 from 65 innings. He is averaging 42.02 and has a strike rate of 160.85. The Trinidad-born has registered 14 half-centuries this year in the T20 format and has a highest score of 98. Pooran has hit 139 fours and 152 sixes so far. In CPL 2024, the left-handed batter had 312 runs from nine matches at an average of 39 and a strike rate of 175.28.
Trinbago Knight Riders have sailed into the playoffs and are currently placed at No. 3 on the points table with one game left to play. Meanwhile, Barbados Royals have also progressed beyond the league stage and are currently stationed in the fourth spot.
