England and Sri Lanka are locking horns in Match 25 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Thursday, October 26 at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first as openers Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan walked out to the middle to give a great start to their team.

Dilshan Madushanka started the proceedings with the ball for Sri Lanka and bowled the perfect first delivery which sharply nipped back into Bairstow but the batter managed to play it down the ground and get three runs for it. However, Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis felt that the ball had hit the pads first and thought about going for the review. However, the entire team couldn’t finalise their decision and ran out of time.

The replay showed that the ball had actually hit Bairstow’s pad first and the ball tracking further showed ‘three reds’ for the English batter meaning that he would’ve been out, had Sri Lanka reviewed it. Seeing the replays on the big screen, the entire Sri Lankan team was left ruing their decision to not review as they would’ve got off to a perfect start in the must-win game.

Watch the incident here:

Bairstow couldn’t make most of his reprieve as he got dismissed for 30 (31) while his opening partner Dawid Malan scored 28 (25) and added 45 runs for the first wicket before getting dismissed against Angelo Mathews.

England get bundled out for 156

After a decent opening stand, England lost wickets in a cluster as Joe Root (3 off 10), Jos Buttler (8 off 6), Liam Livingstone (1 off 6), and Moeen Ali (15 off 15) departed cheaply to leave their side reeling on 122/6. Ben Stokes was the lone warrior in England’s innings as he played a knock of 43 off 73 balls smashing six fours in his innings.
