Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are locking horns in Match 30 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Monday, October 30 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. After being put in to bat first, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 241 in 49.3 overs. During the second innings of the match, a hilarious moment was witnessed on the pitch as Sri Lankan captain and wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis fell onto the stumps while collecting the ball.

Earlier in the first innings, Mendis failed to convert his start into a big score as he got dismissed for 39 (50) smashing three fours in his innings. Notably, it was his fourth consecutive below-par score for Mendis who started the tournament with a sensational 76 and 122 against South Africa and Pakistan respectively.

The wicketkeeper batter is the third-highest run scorer for Sri Lanka so far with 268 runs from six innings at an average of 44.66 and a strike rate of 127.01 with one hundred and one fifty to his name.

Coming back to the match, apart from Mendis, Pathum Nissanka (46 off 60), Sadeera Samarawickrama (36 off 40) also played handy knocks to help Sri Lanka reach 241 all out in 49.3 overs. Fazalhaq Farooqi was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan as he scalped 4/34 in ten overs Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2/38) also picked two wickets.

In reply, Afghanistan didn’t get off to a great start in their chase losing their opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz (0 off 4) in the first over itself. However, Ibrahim Zadran (39 off 57) and Rahmat Shah (62 off 74) added 73 runs for the second wicket to stabilize the innings. Following their dismissals, captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (58* off 74) and Azmatullah Omarzai (73* off 63) got involved in an unbeaten 111-run stand to help their side chase down 242 in 45.2 overs and win the match by seven wickets.
