CWC 2023: Shardul Thakur's brilliance on the boundary helps India get their second wicket against Afghanistan
Shardul Thakur took a spectacular catch on the boundary to help India get their second wicket.
India and Afghanistan are locking horns in Match 09 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday, October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and elected to bat first. Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (21 off 28) and Ibrahim Zadran (22 off 28) added 32 runs for the first wicket off 40 balls before Jasprit Bumrah struck the first blow for India by dismissing Zadran.
Further ahead in the innings, Shardul Thakur helped India scalp their second wicket with his brilliance at deep backward square leg. On the fourth ball of the 13th over, Hardik Pandya bowled a short delivery to Rahmanullah Gurbaz and the Afghan opener hooked it towards the boundary. Thakur, who was stationed at deep backward square leg, showed great presence of mind to catch the ball inside the boundary and quickly got rid of it as he was falling over.

The 31-year-old completed the catch by returning inside the boundary and helped India claim their second wicket.

In the very next over, Thakur picked India’s third wicket with the ball as he trapped Rahmat Shah (16 off 22) in front of the stumps on the very first ball of the over. Unhappy with the decision, Shah reviewed it but the umpire’s call on hitting brought curtains on his innings. Following his wicket, Afghanistan were left reeling at 63/3 after 13.1 overs.
