Former West Indies all rounder and world champion Darren Sammy has been named as Head Coach of the national team across both the limited-over formats and the Test format as well. Notably, Sammy has already been at the helm as he took over as the coach in the ODI and T20I setups from last year.
As per the latest developments, the former West Indies Captain is all set to take charge of the team fully from April, next year. He will be replacing the current coach Andre Coley, as informed by the Cricket West Indies Director, Miles Bascombe. Meanwhile, reflecting on the good news, Sammy said that he felt honoured to represent the nation in any format or capacity. Interestingly, he also added that he never dreamt of coaching but as time passed by, he became fond of it.
"It's always an honour to represent West Indies in any format or any position. For me, this news is not something I was expecting. Coaching was never something I saw myself doing but I must admit the way that it's been going, I've developed a much stronger passion and a love for the job, I believe in processes, something that we've been able to do in the white-ball formats and, with this new role, I've already mapped out some of the areas and some of the processes that we'll have to follow in order for us to be successful [in Test cricket]. I'm a patient man and once I trust that process and understand the requirement from the director of cricket, then the plan gets into action," Sammy was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
"So I'm really excited about the added responsibility and the new journey, one that I think myself and my team will be prepared for," he further added.
West Indies performed commendably during Sammy's Captaincy tenure
Speaking of Darren Sammy, he Captained West Indies to immense success as a leader of the team. Under him, from May 2023, Windies played 28 matches in the ODI format and had a win percentage slightly more than 50 percent. Given that the team was under a transition period, winning 15 ODIs can be deemed as an impressive record for Sammy. During this period, out of the seven bilateral series played, Windies won four of them.

While in the T20Is, the Caribbean side featured in 35 T20Is and won 20 games out of them. Notably, they won four T20I series in their backyard against the likes of England, India and South Africa, respectively. While they lost to Australia and Sri Lanka while playing away from home. In Tests, under the current Head Coach, they won two matches and drew as many games as well. While West Indies ended up on the losing side on seven occasions. However, their most notable win happened in Australia where they trumped the mighty Aussies by just eight runs in Brisbane, early this year.
