David Warner and Virat Kohli are not part of the Fab Four: Aakash Chopra
Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson are coined 'Fab Four' for their impressive record in Test cricket
Virat Kohli's performance has been on the radar after his lean patch in Test cricket since 2019; he came back with a brilliant hundred against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023, but his recent failure in the World Test Championship (WTC) final has again challenged his form. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes Kohli and David Warner are not part of the ‘Fab Four’ anymore, and now it has been reduced to ‘Fab Three’ with Kane Williamson, Joe Root and Steve Smith.
Although Warner's name was later extended to the elite list with the extension of ‘Fab Four’, after his recent performances, Chopra believes he is not part of this list. Whereas star Indian batter was in the form of his life from 2014-19, and other batters like Williamson, Root and Smith were also performing well during that time. The fab four averaged more than 50 in Test cricket in those five years, with English batter having the least among them (50.82).
“Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson were a sure shot 'Fab Four' at one point. In fact, even David Warner's name was present on that list. We are talking about Test cricket. We are talking about the period between 2014 and 2019. But we don't have a 'Fab Four' now, only a 'Fab Three'," said Chopra on his YouTube channel.
"If we talk about Virat Kohli's performances between 2014 and 2019, he played 62 matches and scored 5695 runs at an average of 58.71 with the help of 22 centuries. Kohli was unstoppable. There was a home season where he scored four double-centuries. He was absolutely brilliant," he further added.
Kohli's lean patch ended with a century in Ahmedabad Test against Australia; before this, he had 40 innings without a Test century. But endured failure in the 2023 WTC final against a similar opponent with scores of 14 & 49,
Chopra thinks Babar Azam still has to wait to be part of the ‘Fab Four’-
It will interesting to see if any new member will join the ‘Fab Four’ list in Test cricket. Babar Azam's name comes up with his nine centuries in 47 games in the longest format of the game, but Chopra stated that Babar still is not part of the list. It will interesting to see if Babar joins the elite list or if Kohli makes a comeback to get back on the list.
