With Aaron Finch deciding to retire from ODI cricket, the speculations have begun in the cricketing world about the potential successor of the skipper. Pat Cummins, David Warner, Steve Smith and Alex Carey are currently the favourties to take up the responsibility and lead Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup. However, Warner will have to change his current status to lead the team as he is still banned from any captaincy-related role in Australian cricket.

To change that, Warner is expected to meet the officials of Cricket Australia in the foreseeable future. He is ready to clear their doubts but the 2018 ball-tampering scandal is still fresh in the minds of the Australians and cricket fans around the world. Even though a huge section of the fans want to see him lead, there still is a portion who’s a bit reluctant on him. Nevertheless, Warner assured that he indeed will talk to the officials and that he is in no hurry.

“I have spoken to Nick Hockley, we're going to try and have a catch-up. It's very difficult at the moment but I'm sure in the next couple of weeks we might be able to. But there's no rush for anything,” Warner was quoted as saying by 'foxsports.com.au'.

He further added, “I think at the end of the day it's about what questions do they want to ask me. That's where the conversation starts and then we can lead from there. At the end of the day, it's almost a completely new ball game from when 2018 happened. I would be interested to see and hear what their thoughts are and what not. And then we can probably go from there.”

Even though he is ready to sit with the officials, Warner clarified that his main objective is to play cricket for the nation. After the New Zealand series, he has taken a break from the India series and will be next seen in the T20 World Cup.

Cummins and Finch want David Warner to lead the ODI team

The current Test captain Pat Cummins and T20I captain Aaron Finch feel the time is right for Warner to take charge of the team. Cummins, who’s one of the favourites to lead the side, believes that it is unrealistic for him to lead the team in all three formats. The pacer missed 28 of the last 66 One Day Internationals for the Kangaroos and thus, it’s unreasonable to see him lead the way. That’s why he batted for the opener to lead in this format of the game.

That is exactly what Aaron Finch, the departing captain wants as well. He believes Warner is tactically very sound and everyone loves to play under him.

“I think CA (Cricket Australia) are revisiting what that looks like. He’s (David Warner) someone I’ve played under a few times for Australia when he’s had the opportunity to captain, and he’s been fantastic. He’s an unbelievable tactical captain and someone who at the time the guys loved playing under," Finch said on Triple M radio.
