Devajit Saikia and Prabhtej Singh Bhatia are in line to be elected unopposed as BCCI secretary and treasurer, respectively, on Sunday, January 12. They are the only two names featured in the final list of contesting candidates.

The list of contesting candidates was prepared by the BCCI electoral officer and former Chief Election Commissioner of India, Achal Kumar Joti, on Tuesday, January 7. The window to file the nominations ended last week while the deadline to withdraw nominations ended at 2 PM (IST) on Tuesday. As there were no withdrawals, the electoral officer published the final list of contesting candidates later in the day (5 PM).

The election will be held on the sidelines of the BCCI's SGM on January 12 and the result, which has now been reduced to a mere formality, will be announced on the same day.

Saikia has been serving as the interim secretary of the BCCI since Jay Shah started his tenure as the ICC chairman on December 1, 2024. Meanwhile, Bhatia filed the nomination for the treasurer's post after Ashish Shelar, who recently took oath as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government, vacated it.

The BCCI has important tournaments lined up in the upcoming months. After losing back-to-back Test series against New Zealand and Australia, India return home to host England in white-ball rubber. The two teams will face each other in a five-match T20I series followed by three ODIs. After these encounters, the Men in Blue will compete in the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19.

There will be no respite for BCCI as the Women's Premier League (WPL) is expected to begin in early February. The third edition of this tournament will be followed by the Indian Premier League (IPL), which will begin shortly after the Champions Trophy final on March 9.
