New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway has relished batting at the top in limited-overs cricket and is known for his explosive batting in the powerplay for his side. Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer was left impressed by the rise of the batter climbing up the ranks from First-class cricket to the national team.

One of the biggest strengths of the player is his adaptability and versatility across all the formats for the BlackCaps. Conway understands the dynamics and delivers according to the requirements of the game. In the first match of their Super 12 campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022, Conway swiftly hit across the ground and gave his side a major head-start as he ended up scoring an unbeaten 92 off just 58 balls.

He just does not seem to get out: Wasim Jaffer

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer explained how the player rose up the ranks and made it to the top level of New Zealand cricket, further lauding his experience.

“He is very versatile, he plays down the ground well, plays the sweep and reverse-sweep and for a long time he’s been in tremendous form. It appears he just does not seem to get out! In T20 cricket, he averages more than 50 which is phenomenal. He got the experience as he’s played a lot of cricket, not like he immediately got the opportunity to play for New Zealand,” said Jaffer on ‘BatBricks7 Presents Run Ki Runneeti show on CricTracker’.

“He’s played lots of First-class cricket, so he’s just making up for the time he had lost had he played earlier. Suryakumar Yadav, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, to a name a few, they played years and years of First-class cricket. This prepares you and lessens the bridge between international cricket and First-class cricket. But if this does not happen, probably, this is the reason why Sri Lankan pacers have got injured because they don’t have too much experience in First-class cricket. In that way, Devon Conway is making the most of it, a phenomenal and one of the best players of New Zealand!” added Jaffer.
