Don't want to prove a point, just want to go out with a bang: Dean Elgar

After his exceptional century against India, Dean Elgar emphasised that his focus was not on proving a point but on relishing a day that belonged to him. He noted that the pitch, devoid of direct sunlight, remained conducive for batting, contrary to expectations of cracking due to the absence of sunshine. Expressing a desire to pursue run-scoring opportunities, Elgar aimed to depart the international scene "with a bang", prioritising enjoyment over proving himself. 

The 36-year-old, usually recognized for his steadfast approach at the crease, surprised many with an uncharacteristic display of aggressive batting during Day 2 of Boxing Day Test against India. The seasoned left-hander, set to bid adieu to international cricket soon, notched up an impressive unbeaten 140, embellished with 23 boundaries. His stellar performance propelled South Africa into a commanding position on the second day of the Test. 

“I don't think I wanted to prove any point. Just that I wanted to go out with a bang as that is standard I set for myself as there's no looking back now. It was quite a good wicket to bat on. Had there been more sun, it would have been tougher. It's just that it's been my way. Could have been another batter another day,” Elgar said as quoted by NDTV Sports. 

“Your mindset has to be looking to score but also defend and leave balls. There's one ball with your name on it jags back. When you look to score, you are in better position to make good decisions, capitalised on balls that are over pitched,” he added.

Elgar’s swansong scheduled at venue holding emotional values 

The former South African skipper had announced he would retire after the two-match Test series against India at home. Concluding an illustrious 11-year international career, Elgar has decided to bid farewell post the India series. His penultimate appearance will be at Centurion, his home ground, with the final match scheduled at Newlands, a venue holding sentimental value as it witnessed his maiden Test runs.

“Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate. Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams. It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have,” Elgar had said.
