The MAK Pataudi Trophy is reportedly set to be retired by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The upcoming Test series between India and England in June and July might witness a renaming of the trophy. There is a possibility of a name change, similar to how the Wisden Trophy was renamed.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding the news. The reason behind the ECB’s move remains unknown. However, it would not be surprising if the ECB decides to rename the series from the MAK Pataudi Trophy to something that includes the names of legendary cricketers from both India and England.

According to a source, the Pataudi family has been informed about the decision to change the name. It is believed that the ECB acknowledges the family's approval, as trophies are often retired after a certain period.

"That is the understanding from the ECB. Apparently, trophies are retired after some time," a source was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

History of Major Test Series Named After Legendary Cricketers

The MAK Pataudi Trophy will not be the first trophy to undergo a name change. The Wisden Trophy, contested between England and the West Indies, was renamed the Richards-Botham Trophy to honour the legacy of Sir Vivian Richards and Sir Ian Botham, two legendary cricketers and close friends.

On the other hand, some trophies have retained their original names for a long time. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (India vs. Australia), The Ashes (England vs. Australia), the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy (Sri Lanka vs. Australia), and the Frank Worrell Trophy (West Indies vs. Australia) are some such examples.

The term "MAK Pataudi Trophy" was introduced in 2007 when India toured England. However, when England tours India, the two teams compete for the Anthony de Mello Trophy, a name that originated in 1951 in honour of the former BCCI President, Anthony de Mello. If the name change occurs, it will be the first time in 18 years that the India versus England Test series will see a modification in its title.
