Ellyse Perry goes past Rohit Sharma to become most-capped player in T20 World Cups

Ellyse Perry has created history by becoming the most-capped player in the T20 World Cup. The Australian all-rounder achieved the feat against South Africa in the group stage of the mega event. The defending defeated the hosts on Saturday, February 18, at the St George's Park in Gqeberha. It was the Australian cricketer's 40th appearance in the mega event.
Reaching a new landmark, Perry went past India Men’s team captain, Rohit Sharma, who has played 39 matches in T20 world cups from 2007 to 2022. Sharma and Perry are among the few players, who have played in all the editions of this mega event so far. The Aussie quick made her debut in T20 cricket against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2008. Her all-round performance helped Australia beat England.
Meg Lanning-led Australia Women started their T20 world cup campaign with three wins against New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Perry has got only one chance to bat in the tournament so far. She scored 40 runs against White Ferns and helped her team secure a massive 97-run win.
Australia defeated South Africa by six wickets and booked a place in the Women's T20 World Cup semi-finals. Chasing 125, the defending champions reached their target with 21 balls remaining. Australia lost their key wickets as Beth Mooney, Lanning, and Perry departed earlier.
However, Tahlia McGrath’s half-century helped her side to make it four wins in a row. McGrath scored 57 off 33 balls and emerged as the Player of The Match. Australia has now won four from four matches to finish top of Group 1.
Before Perry, India captain Rohit Sharma was the only player who played in every edition of the T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007. In 2022, he became the Indian batter to score the most sixes (36), previously held by Yuvraj Singh.
The 35-year-old cricketer is now taking part in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He scored a ton in the first Test against Australia at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Rohit-led India now won both the Test and took a 2-0 lead in the four-match series.
