The 13th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 was played between Afghanistan and England at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. English captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to field first on a pitch that seemed favourable for batting.

In the end, Afghanistan secured a historic victory, defeating England by a significant margin of 69 runs. This defeat adds to England's history of being on the receiving end of upsets in shorter formats. Prior to this, they were defeated by Bangladesh in the 2015 World Cup, as well as suffering losses to Ireland and Bangladesh in the 2011 World Cup, and many more.

In the 1992 World Cup, Zimbabwe pulled off a surprising victory over England by nine runs. Despite scoring just 134 runs while batting first, Zimbabwe successfully defended their low score and emerged as the winner.

Moving on to 2011, Kevin O'Brien delivered a stunning performance that led to Ireland's greatest victory against England. O'Brien's record-breaking century, scored in just 63 deliveries, propelled Ireland to a three-wicket triumph in Bangalore. John Mooney also played a crucial innings to contribute to this historic win for the Irish team.

Continuing in 2011, Bangladesh defeated England by two wickets. England scored 225 runs before being bowled out in the 49th over, with Jonathan Trott and Eoin Morgan being the top scorers. In response, Bangladesh successfully chased down the target with two wickets in hand.

In the 2015 World Cup, Bangladesh once again defeated England, this time by 15 runs. This victory in Adelaide allowed Bangladesh to progress to the quarter-finals. Mahmudullah's century, the first by a Bangladeshi player in a World Cup, set the tone for the match, supported by contributions from Soumya Sarkar and Mushfiqur Rahim. Despite Jos Buttler's half-century for England, Bangladesh's bowlers, led by Rubel Hossain, played a crucial role in securing the win.

These defeats add to England's history of being on the receiving end of upsets in shorter formats, showcasing the unpredictable nature of cricket and the ability of underdogs to triumph over big teams.
