After thrashing West Indies 3-0 in the Test series, England (ENG) are now focused on the upcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka (SL), slated to begin on Wednesday, August 21. To remain in the race for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC), the Three Lions cannot even settle for a draw as the likes of Australia and India are miles ahead in the race. They would face each other in a five-match series later in the year, where either team would drop points and for the same reason, England are still in contention.
However, their captain Ben Stokes will miss the series, owing to a hamstring injury. That is a massive blow to the team, as Ollie Pope will lead the side for the first time. Opener Zak Crawley too has been ruled out as Dan Lawrence will be opening alongside Ben Duckett. When it comes to the bowling department, Chris Woakes will lead the pace unit. Gus Atkinson, who was ruthless in the series against West Indies, will be key alongside Mark Wood.
On the other hand, playing in English conditions won’t be an easy task for Sri Lanka. They have quality players in the form of Dimuth Karunaratne, Dhananjaya de Silva, Angelo Mathews and Prabhat Jayasuriya. Their bowling unit is slightly concerning but Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara are experienced enough and that would come in handy.
