Essex County Club appoint Andy Tennant as women's team director

Essex County Cricket Club has announced the appointment of Andy Tennant as their new women's team director for the upcoming season. Tennant has plenty of experience as a coach under his belt, recently served as head coach of Sunrisers, where he led the team to victory in the final Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy under the previous regional format. 

His former Sunrisers colleague Danni Warren has also been roped in as the new performance director. Speaking about his new position, Tennant expressed confidence and enthusiasm for the opportunity.

"Having worked with Danni and the majority of the staff and players at Sunrisers, I know the strength and potential of the team we’re building here. Our focus will be on creating an environment where players and staff can thrive and fulfill their potential, both on and off the field. This is a fantastic opportunity to drive towards sustainable success and help Essex Women become a leading force in the game," he said in a statement.

Women's teams to participate alongside men in the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup

Essex is currently preparing to compete in the ECB's Tier 1 status competition alongside seven other counties: Durham, Hampshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire (The Blaze), Somerset, Surrey, and Warwickshire. The structure is set to expand further in 2027 with the addition of Glamorgan and Yorkshire.

The 2025 season is a historic moment for women's cricket, as women's teams will participate alongside men in the T20 Blast and One-Day Cup for the first time. Essex has already begun strengthening their squad, securing the signing of Sunrisers all-rounder Kelly Castle for the 2025 season.

The club is also hosting international fixtures, with Chelmsford set to welcome England Women versus West Indies Women for an IT20 match on May 26, 2025.
