After Team India's dominant performance against South Africa in the 37th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at Eden Gardens, in Kolkata, the standout player of the day was birthday boy, Virat Kohli. He achieved a remarkable feat by scoring a special century. Consequently, the prolific batter equalled the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most centuries in One Day Internationals.
When asked about his thoughts on whether Virat Kohli’s birthday made it a bit more special and motivated the team to decimate South Africa and the celebration following this historic milestone and the possibility of Virat surpassing the little master's record, Ravindra Jadeja responded with a playful tone. The street-smart all-rounder said that 'everyday is a birthday' when a player dons the national jersey and plays on the field in front of beloved fans. Also, he came up with another cheeky reply to the comparison between the Indian legends by saying that whatever records are happening it was only benefitting Team India which is the most cherishable part of the Kohli-Tendulkar batting comparison.
“There’s no such relation between birthday’s and playing for India. Whenever you wear an Indian jersey, that’s birthday for us. There’s no celebration as such, as of now. Look, whatever the 49 and 50 we are talking about, it’s falling on the same plate. Let it go as its going, it’s a happy occasion, and the World Cup is happening in India. So, whatever records get broken whether it may be in runs or wickets, it's eventually good for us. ‘Nazar Mat Lagana’ (Don’t cast an evil eyes)” Jadeja said at the press conference.
From the first day, I think like a captain but I am not the one: Jadeja
During a post-match press conference, the versatile all-rounder of Team India, humorously revealed that he often thought like a captain, even though he doesn't hold that key role. Furthermore, the 34-year-old highlighted his dual responsibility as a wicket-taker and a contributor of 30-35 runs, emphasizing his crucial role in the team. In the ODI World Cup 2023 match against South Africa, his performance helped restrict the opposition to just 83 runs in 27.1 overs, further solidifying India's impressive World Cup campaign.
"From the first day, I think like a captain but it is another thing that I am not the one. As an all-rounder, scoring 30-35 runs and being a partnership breaker, that's the role I have. I always try to give an impactful performance," Jadeja continued.
"And I never take fielding for granted. I can also miss a catch, so I am always prepared that if I get a catch, I don't relax on the field. So, I just keep trying. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. But I keep trying," Jadeja concluded.
