Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly took the bold decision of removing Virat Kohli from ODI captaincy and appointing Rohit Sharma for the same role. He was massively criticised for the move, more so after Kohli's press conference before India’s tour to South Africa in 2022. At that time, the 52-year-old mentioned that it was a mutual decision but Kohli later shared a different version of the story, in which, he mentioned receiving a call of him being removed.
Since then, Ganguly didn’t open up on the matter until recently when India won the T20 World Cup. After the Men in Blue’s success in the tournament, the former cricketer reminded that it was he who backed Rohit as captain as he eventually brought an ICC trophy to India after 11 years. Ganguly also added that he was criticised back then for the move but now, no one remembers his decision.

“When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of the Indian team, everyone criticised me. Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was I who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team,” Ganguly told Bengali daily Aajkaal.
Ganguly aims to become DC’s head coach
After Delhi Capitals parted ways with Ricky Ponting, Ganguly expressed his desire to take over as head coach. He mentioned bringing in some new players in the setup and added that he liked England’s Jamie Smith much before his debut and wanted to bring him in SA20 but the schedule didn’t help.

“I am planning for the next IPL. I want DC to win this time. I will speak to the management about appointing an Indian as the head coach. I want to give a shot as the head coach. I will bring in some new players. Wanted to bring in Jamie Smith from England. I wanted to test him out in Delhi's SA20 franchise. He wanted to come in but the schedules did not match,” Ganguly said.
