Star Australia batter Steve Smith has expressed his trust in captain Pat Cummins. The express pacer was handed the baton after a major controversy concerning Tim Paine shook Australian cricket. There were questions about a pacer being named captain but the 31-year-old has done a commendable job, including winning the World Test Championship Final against India and retaining the urn in The Ashes in 2023.

Commenting on the journey under Cummins, Smith commented that he has done a great job for the team and is backed by his teammates. He reminded Australia’s success in recent times and noted that Cummins is calm, composed relaxed and that helps the team culture.

“He's done a great job, hasn't he? (For) the last couple of years. He's been backed up by some really good players, we're a very good side obviously, and been playing good cricket. So, you know, he's come into the role nicely, he's calm, composed and very relaxed and yeah, he's done a wonderful job so far and hopefully, that continues,” Smith responded to CricTracker’s query via Star Sports.

Meanwhile, Smith will be batting at number four in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, slated to begin on November 22. After David Warner retired from Test cricket, Smith expressed the desire to bat at the top, but his move wasn’t a success, having scored 171 runs in four matches. Ahead of the five-match series against India, the team management wanted him to be back in the middle order as Nathan McSweeney has been picked to be Usman Khawaja’s partner.
