Farhan Ahmed becomes youngest bowler in County history to pick five-wicket haul

Farhan Ahmed who is just 16 years old at the moment, has registered his name in history books by becoming the youngest bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in the ongoing County Championship. Notably, Farhan is the younger brother of England's leg-spinner, Rehan Ahmed, has been performing brilliantly at a very young age.

His recent performance for Nottinghamshire against Surrey at Trent Bridge has shattered all the records. At just 16 years and 189 days old at the start of the match, Farhan surpassed the previous record held by Derbyshire's Hamidullah Qadri, who was 16 years and 203 days when he took a five-wicket haul in 2017. This achievement is even more impressive considering the calibre of batters the youngster dismissed, including Test players- Rory Burns, Ben Foakes, and Will Jacks.

You don’t want two leg-spinners in the same team: Farhan Ahmed

Speaking of Farhan Ahmed's final figures of 7-140 from 50.4 overs showed his wicket-taking ability but also his remarkable control. He maintained an economy rate of just 2.76 runs per over, outperforming his more experienced teammates in a high-scoring game where Surrey scored over 500 runs. This isn't the first time Farhan has made headlines.

He had already set a record as Nottinghamshire's youngest County Championship player and represented England at the U19 level. Interestingly, unlike his brother Rehan who is a leg-spinner, Farhan bowls off-spin. Both brothers will be hoping to represent England in the future together.

“You don’t want two leg-spinners in the same team. If we want to play for England, we’re going to have to do two different things,” Rehan told Telegraph in 2022.
