Faruque Ahmed has been elected the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president after Nazmul Hassan resigned from the position during a board meeting in Dhaka, on Wednesday, August 21. Notably, Ahmed represented Bangladesh cricket team from 1988 to 1999 and also captained the side for a brief period.
Besides, he was also a part of Bangladesh's squad for the 1999 World Cup in England. Ahmed played seven ODIs for Bangladesh, scoring 105 runs, with a highest score of 57. His last international appearance came on May 27, 1999 versus Australia. One of the right-handed batter's cousins, Shahriar Nafees, played 24 Tests, 75 ODIs, and one T20I for Bangladesh from 2005 to 2013.
After retiring from the sport, Ahmed continued to serve as an administrator in Bangladesh cricket. He also served as the chief selector for two terms: from 2003 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2016. However, the 58-year-old had resigned without completing his second term after refusing to accept the expansion of the three-member selection panel.

The BCB's umpires committee chairman Iftekhar Ahmed confirmed the development to Cricbuzz on Wednesday. The Asian country's cricket governing body is currently having a board meeting in the Ministry of Youth and Sports wherein the former president resigned before Ahmed was elected.
Previous reports suggested that Nazmul was willing to relinquish his post as the BCB boss. He was serving his fourth term as the chief of BCB, and has been in hiding with his wife in London ever since the socio-political tension in the country, which initiated after students protested against the recently dissolved Sheikh Hasina government.
