The ICC T20 World Cup 2022 was when Suryakumar Yadav cemented his position as one of the best batters in T20I cricket across the world. His performances saw him become the number one-ranked T20I batter as well.
With the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 well underway, all eyes were set on Surya. However, much to many fans’ disappointment, the 32-year-old has been unable to perform to the best of his abilities in the tournament. Surya came into the tournament on the back of poor performances for India in their multi-format series against Australia.
In the three matches that he has played in the ongoing season of the IPL, he has only managed to score 16 runs to his name, with his highest score being a score of 15 runs against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the fifth game of the season. Following his poor performances, former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram came forward to help the 32-year-old amid the slump.
"With Suryakumar, form is temporary and class is forever, I can understand, when you’re out of form, you try to play the first few balls conservatively, save your wicket, and look for a single. These tough moments happen even to the best," Wasim Akram told Sportskeeda.
I’m sure he has the ability to win matches: Akram
Continuing upon the same, Akram also opined that he was sure of seeing at least one unbelievable performance from Surya at the IPL 2023. He stated that the team needs to get behind the Indian batter and assure him of their belief in him.
"They need to put an arm around his shoulder and tell him: ‘you’re our match winner, we believe in you', I’m sure he has the ability to win matches all on his own. This year, we will see him pull off at least one unbelievable performance which only he can do," Wasim Akram concluded.
