New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has been terrific for the side in terms of his captaincy in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. However, his form with the bat has been a subject of much speculation considering that the skipper has endured a string of slow outings.
In his three innings against Australia, Sri Lanka, and England, the batter had got just 71 runs under his belt. However, he roared back of form in the clash against Ireland where he smashed 61 off 35. Former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta opined that the player needs ‘one innings’ to get his form back on track which eventually happened.
“It’s like they say, ‘Form is temporary, class is permanent’, the form will come back. It takes one good shot, one good innings to get that rhythm back. When you middle the ball or you get your favourite shot, suddenly your body and mind start feeling good. But the issues with Kane are a little deep as the bowlers are able to get the dot balls out of him,” said Deep Dasgupta on 'BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti' on CricTracker.
He should reinvent his game: Deep Dasgupta
Dasgupta further stated that if Williamson needs to play the T20 format, Kane will need to reinvent his game and change his current batting template. As Williamson already let his bat talk in the game against Ireland, it remains to be seen if he will be able to continue this rhythm.
“The bowlers are using the slower balls, using the field set in a manner that he will have to open the face of the bat and cannot get the single. So, he gets sucked into this and plays a bad shot and gets out and a pattern has been formed since one and a half years. But I say that, his class remains undoubtable, but he should reinvent his game in T20 cricket. He has to break the current template which he s currently batting with,” added Deep Dasgupta.
New Zealand require a win in their final match against Ireland to seal their berth in the semi-finals of the marquee event and fight for the coveted title. However, the Irish side could dent their chances considering they have been impressive in the tournament thus far.
